The bit allows the rider to control the horse's head, neck and shoulders through the reins. The mouthpiece is placed in the horse's mouth to drive him, regulate his pace and direct him in his search for balance. Ideally, the bit should be as soft as possible in the horse's mouth. The choice of bit will depend on several parameters: the horse's morphology, the discipline practised, the horse's reaction to its usual bit and the rider's search.
